and and Sun-Sentinel, Thursday, December 19, 1996 7B OBITUARIES Harry Kemelman, wrote Rabbi Small mysteries Sun-Sentinel wire services In a dozen detective novels, Dad Small, the rabbi with a "scholarly stoop" from Barnard's Crossing, solved a succession of crimes and introduced millions of mystery lovers to Jewish culture. Harry Kemelman, who wrote the Rabbi Small mysteries, died of renal failure on Sunday at home in Marblehead, Mass. He was 88. Rabbi Small solves his mysteries with brains, not brawn. "On the basis of inferential logic, the mystery is solved," Mr.
Kemelman said in a May 21 profile published in the Globe. "That's pretty much what Rabbi Small does. It's Talmudic, this determination of the meaning of one thing by virtue of a single word." Mr. Kemelman was born and raised in Boston. He graduated from Boston University and earned a master's degree in linguistics at Harvard University.
He taught English at Boston State College and Northeastern University. He moved to Marblehead in 1951 to attend to a block of stores his father owned. 1. The similarities between Marblehead and Barnard's Crossing are many. In the years after World War II, as their numbers in the Marblehead area began to grow, Jewish people began to toss around the idea of creating the area's first synagogue.
Mr. Kemelman watched the birthing process closely and turned it into a book. "I called it The Building of the Temple, and I sent it off to a lot of New York publishers," he said in a story published on Feb. 25 in the Washington Post. "No one wanted to buy it.
Then an editor at Crown named Arthur Fields wrote and invited me to drop in on him if I were ever in New York. Of course, I made it my business to be in New York as soon as possible after that." Fields, who was familiar with short stories Mr. Kemelman had published in Ellery Queen Mystery magazine, suggested he meld his mystery technique with the small-town Jewish elements in the rejected 1 manuscript. "Then that night, as I was returning home, I noted the parking lot of the synagogue Israel in Swampscott, looked like a good place to hide a body," Mr. Kemelman said.
"So I just sat down and started typing." After 12 days of nonstop writing, and a year of rewriting and revision under Fields, Friday The Rabbi Slept Late was published in 1964. Mr. Kemelman was 55 when the novel first saw print. When he was 60, he resigned as an English professor at Boston State College to write. He wrote 11 other Rabbi Small mysteries.
In May, Sylvia Barack Fishman, assistant professor of Judaic studies at Brandeis University, said, "Jewish audiences enjoyed seeing themselves in print in a way that did not make them look like a grotesque version of the bourgeois American dream." G. Moverley, bishop who shunned IRA striker LONDON The Right Rev.
