35 I've Been Killing Slimes For 300 Years And Maxed Out My Level Contains An Important Message
Azusa Aizawa and Her Friends Lead An Easygoing Life
✕ Remove Ads
I've Been Killing Slimes For 300 Years is the kind of isekai that introduces an overpowered protagonist to allow for a more relaxed setting. The protagonist is Azusa Aizawa, a woman who was an office worker in her old life before she lost her life from being overworked. Granted a new life, Azusa wished for nothing more than a simple life where she could take it easy. An immortal who lives in a modest home, Azusa pays for her life by hunting slimes and selling their crystals. Yet hundreds of years of hunting slimes have accumulated, making her one of the most powerful beings on the planet.
While I've Been Killing Slimes is a silly concept, it conceals a great message about the importance of not overworking oneself underneath. The series' focus on slice of life adventures operates as relaxation therapy for Azusa and the viewer. Even when Azusa is forced to interact with the rest of the world, she does so at her own pace, never allowing anyone to overwork her. This is a fun story with a great theme, yet it's safe to say many isekai rank far above it.

33 The Devil Is a Part-Timer! Reverses the Isekai Formula with Comedic Flair
A Hilarious Tale of a Demon Lord Adapting to Modern Life and Fast-Food Jobs
The Devil Is a Part-Timer! offers a refreshing and humorous twist on the isekai genre by turning its conventional premise on its head. Instead of following the typical storyline where a human is transported to a fantasy world, the anime presents the story of the demon lord Satan, who, after a catastrophic battle in his world of Ente Isla, is forced to retreat through a portal that lands him in modern-day Tokyo. Stripped of most of his powers and unable to revert to his original form, Satan (now going by the name Sadao Maou) must adapt to the mundane reality of human life.
✕ Remove Ads
To survive, Sadao takes on a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant called MgRonald's, where he learns the ins and outs of customer service while plotting his eventual return to power. The anime is a delightful blend of workplace comedy and supernatural antics as Sadao hilariously navigates the challenges of everyday life, from paying rent to dealing with his quirky coworkers. The contrast between his grandiose ambitions and the trivial nature of his new life creates endless comedic moments. Still, the show also explores deeper themes, such as identity and the nature of power.

32 Cautious Hero Parodies Isekai Tropes with Over-the-Top Humor
An Absurdly Cautious Hero's Extreme Preparation and Its Comedic Consequences
✕ Remove Ads
Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered, but Overly Cautious is a comedic isekai anime that takes a satirical approach to the genre, poking fun at the common tropes found in similar stories. The plot centers on Seiya Ryuuguuin, a hero summoned to a fantasy world by the goddess Ristarte to save it from destruction. However, unlike typical heroes who dive headfirst into adventure, Seiya is absurdly cautious — so much so that he spends excessive time preparing for even the smallest battles, ensuring that he is overwhelmingly powerful before facing any enemy.
The humor in Cautious Hero comes from Seiya's extreme over-preparation, which often leads to ridiculous and exaggerated situations, such as him annihilating weak enemies with devastating attacks that are clearly overkill. His cautious nature often frustrates Ristarte and the other characters, creating a comedic dynamic as they struggle to understand his meticulous methods. Despite its light-hearted and exaggerated humor, the anime also delivers moments of genuine emotion and tension.

31 Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy Places Its Hero At Odds With A Goddess
A Complex Political Landscape Where There's No Hero Or Villain
With most isekai, the protagonist is summoned over and given the favor of the new world's deity....yet Tsukimichi goes down a different path. Misumi Makoto is summoned to a fantasy world at the behest of a goddess, yet before he leaves his own world he's granted a boost in power from Amaterasu of his own world. When he reaches the new world, he's supposed to help battle against the demon race battling humanity. However, the goddess of his new world wants nothing to do with him because he's not pretty enough to interact with her world's "hyumans".

30 Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar Takes The Tenchi Universe Into A Fantasy Realm
An Isekai That Combines Mecha And Harem Elements
✕ Remove Ads
Just before the isekai boom of the 2010s, Tenchi Muyo went into the realm of isekai stories with Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar. The series begins with Kenshi Masaki, who finds himself dragged from Earth to the world of Geminar. To get back home, he agrees to assassinate an Empress inside a giant robot, but finds himself in over his head when the Empress' protection arrives. Still, the Empress takes note of his talent, and forces him to become her attendant. From there, Kenshi builds a life in this new world, slowly accepting he might not be able to go home anymore.
War on Geminar remembers the charm of what made the original Tenchi Muyo work: a largely clueless, yet likable protagonist surrounded by a bevy of beautiful, charming women who have all fallen in love with him. Unlike Tenchi though, this series isn't afraid to dive into action scenes, as Kenshi has been trained to be nearly unstoppable in battle. Still, for newcomers to the Tenchi universe, War on Geminar requires zero knowledge of the franchise, making it easy to check out for anyone who wants an isekai with harem and mecha elements with a surprisingly compelling story.

The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent is a fine isekai Crunchyroll title that stars Sei Takanashi. Tired of her everyday working life in Japan, Sei finds herself in a fantasy world one night.
This is Sei Takanashi's chance to live a relaxing, pleasant life far away from the endless grind of 21st-century Japan, a premise that quite a few modern isekai titles have. 28 Fushigi Yugi Sends Its Heroine Into A Fairy Tale With One Chance Of Leaving

Reading the book, they're transported into a fantastical version of ancient China. 24 Grimgar, Ashes, And Illusions Focuses On Character Drama To Keep Fans Watching
A Heartfelt Exploration of Identity and Survival in a Fantasy World
✕ Remove Ads
Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions ranks among the best isekai on Crunchyroll because it focuses a little less on action and adventure, and more on serious character drama. That makes the Grimgar anime's main characters less like power fantasy self-inserts and more like real people who find themselves in a strange new world.
Protagonist Haruhiro and his allies must also balance their party between different classes and abilities to make sure they can survive against the odds, with Haruhiro electing to become a thief while Ranta is a dark knight and the shy dandere Shihoru is a wizard. Grimgar's solid character drama and dialogue make it better than other generic action/adventure isekai out there, hence its place among Crunchyroll's best isekai, though it doesn't go far enough to break new ground.

23 Knight's & Magic Blends Fantasy With Giant Robots
A Mecha Enthusiast's Dream in a World of Magic and Mechanical Behemoths
Knight's & Magic has a fairly formulaic premise for the most part, but anime fans still count it among the best isekai on Crunchyroll because it has one major twist. In this isekai anime, giant robots are the norm, and they contrast well with the fantasy world they inhabit. Mechs called Silhouette Knights fight to defend innocent people from Demon Beasts.
Protagonist Tsubasa Kurata, a software engineer and a big fan of mecha anime, will see all this for himself when he dies in a car accident and finds himself in the fantastical Fremmevilla Kingdom. 22 I'm The Villainess, So I'm Taming The Final Boss Makes The Bad Girl The Lovable Hero
Redemption and Romance in a Game World
I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss is actually a seinen isekai anime, but it presents itself more as a shojo otome game anime, similar to My Next Life as a Villainess. Protagonist Aileen Lauren d'Autriche is reborn as the antagonist in her favorite dating sim, and she needs to get some plot armor right away. Aileen breaks things off with Prince Cedric and rushes into the arms of the kuudere demon king Claude, who is surprised at first, but then welcomes his new lover. Aileen must figure out her new destiny with Claude by her side, all so she can survive her doom and, most of all, overcome Lilia Rainworth's cruel schemes time and again.
✕ Remove Ads
Overall, I'm the Villainess is a good watch because Aileen is such a smart and kind protagonist who changes everyone's lives for the better, all while developing a surprisingly sweet and inspirational romance with Claude, who's far from a token boyfriend in her eyes. As for Aileen's and Lilia's feud, the anime poses some interesting questions about the ethical boundaries of being an isekai anime protagonist in a game world, surrounded by NPCs. Are those NPCs real people with real feelings, or just toys to play with? Aileen and Lilia have very different answers to that question.

20 My Next Life As A Villainess Stars The Best Co-Ed Harem In Isekai Anime
Katarina's Quest to Rewrite Her Fate and Create an Unlikely Love Story
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! is all but the poster child for modern villainess isekai anime. Plenty of isekai anime series show the hero being reborn as a nobody or an OP superhero, but My Next Life as a Villainess, true to its title, reincarnated its heroine as an otome game antagonist. At age 7, the bratty Katarina Claes will hit her head, then suddenly remember who she was — and realize where she is now.

Katarina, upon resuming her old identity on the inside, will embark on a brand-new quest in the romantic world of Fortune Lover. Rather than being a spoiled bully, Katarina will rewrite everyone's love lives to make sure the story will never end, and thus Katarina the villainess will never face her own doom. Katarina's goal may be selfish, but she genuinely enjoys helping people who need her, so in her eyes, it's a win-win for all involved. She might even succeed too hard and create a co-ed of adoring lovers around her, but Katrina will be too dense to realize what exactly is going on. She's a typical ahodere, which makes the situation that much funnier. The level of comedy is powerful enough to land it closer to the middle of the rankings.

19 Kyo Kara Maoh Is An Early Classic Isekai Title That Aged Well
Timeless Journey from Modern Japan to a Fantasy Realm
Kyo Kara Maoh is an older isekai anime that aired before the isekai boom of the early 2010s. Kyo Kara Maoh's story begins when Yuri Shibuya intervenes to save his friends from bullies, only to get his face shoved into a toilet — and fall into a portal in the process.
Now Yuri is in a brand-new world far from home, but even weirder still is Yuri's newfound demon status. He is destined to become the demon king and is happy to build a new life here, but he still misses his old life in Japan and may feel rather conflicted at times. Kyo Kara Maoh aged well as an older, pre-boom isekai, and that's impressive, earning its place as a fairly good isekai, though it has still been eclipsed by some of the very best isekai out there.
